The ascaris is also known as the intestinal round worm. It acts as a parasite in the small intestine of human being and is common in children. It acts on the half digested food of host, blood and the fluid of alimentary canal. They respire anaerobically and have internal method of fertilization. They are dioecious with no secondary host. The mouth of ascaris has three lips that are present on dorsal and ventro lateral side. The sensory organs include papillae and amphids. These are present on the lips and are gustatory in function. They show sexual dimorphism. The female is longer and straight while the male is short and curved. Females have no spicules and cloaca, while the males have spicules and cloaca. The females have separate anus and genital aperture and these openings are combined in the males. They cause ascariasis. In this there occurs an obstruction in the intestine and causes abdominal pain. It may lead to diarrhea, vomiting and indigestion. In children it causes the growth retardation with mental deficiency. This disease is treated with the anti helminthic drugs like pantel, zentel etc.
